I treat the orange 1990s-style room as mimicry or a dreamlike translation layer. The blue book became a symbol of soul memory, the Oversoul, and the compressed thought packet of the Alien Handbook. I later associated the scarcity of physical contacts with the weakening of Earth's magnetic field and a person's own magnetic state; that explanation was not an immediate visual from the book, but a later model.
